2024: A Year of Sucker Punches and Joyful Surprises

As Mike Tyson famously said, "Everyone has a plan until they are punched in the face." This year has felt like one sucker punch after another. Clients have tightened their belts, I’ve faced the loss of my father in South Africa and I’ve been navigating the relentless demands of completing my MBA. Most of these struggles have been deeply personal, making it a brutally challenging year.

But amidst the tough times, there have been moments of pure joy. We celebrated the first year of my granddaughter Squishy and welcomed another granddaughter, Angel, into the clan (not their real names ;-))
I travelled to Wellington, Christchurch, Westport, Nelson, Picton on a road trip with my husband and South Korea for my MBA Study tour, building meaningful relationships and there were lots of little moments making unforgettable memories with my grown-up children—who, thankfully, still love hanging out with us.

Through it all, I’ve been reminded of the resilience it takes to stand tall when the hits keep coming. Balancing grief, work pressures and academic commitments has been a test of endurance, one that required leaning on my values, reflecting deeply and tapping into my support system.

Dear Leader, Where Do You Reflect?
Leadership is always challenging, especially in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA). This year reinforced the importance of creating space for structured reflection, which is why I launched the Oasis Leadership Retreat. It’s a haven for leaders to pause, connect and gain perspective amidst the chaos. Check it out. https://www.traceyolivier.com/oasis-leadership-retreat/

Leadership matters most when the world feels hardest to navigate. It starts with how you respond to life’s challenges and the meaning you attach to your circumstances. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional when you anchor yourself to a purpose bigger than you.

What I Learned in South Korea
South Korea offered me valuable lessons in leadership and culture. I encountered nunchi, the art of "reading the room"—a form of emotional intelligence that fosters deep social awareness. It’s a skill every leader can benefit from, especially in times of uncertainty.

I also experienced the fast-paced "Pali, Pali" (Hurry, Hurry!) attitude—a driving force behind Korea’s remarkable innovation and efficiency. While inspiring, it reminded me of the importance of balancing speed with mindfulness.

Whatever challenges the year has thrown your way, remember that how you respond shapes your leadership and the experience of those around you. Leadership is a journey and the hard moments are where it counts the most.  Don’t do it on your own.

Here’s to a 2025 filled with resilience, growth, and purpose.

Warm blessings to you and yours,
