I recently learned a new word in my many, many readings for this MBA paper. As I read it, I could feel the relief wash over me. I will tell you why later……
Liminality.
This is a critical yet often overlooked phase in career development: the in-between stages of leadership. This period, marked by transition and transformation, can be both challenging and enriching. Let’s explore how you can navigate this stage effectively and prepare yourself to step into your next leadership role with confidence.
Understanding Liminality in Leadership
Liminality, derived from the Latin word "limen", meaning threshold, refers to the transitional phase where an individual is neither in their old nor fully in their new role. This period can feel like a void, filled with uncertainty and ambiguity, but it is also a fertile ground for growth and learning. Here are some things that will help…
Embrace the Transition
· Acknowledge the Phase: Accept that being in between roles is a natural part of career progression. Accepting this stage can alleviate anxiety and open up space for growth.
· Self-Reflection: Use this time to reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Understand your values, motivations, and long-term goals. Journaling, seeking feedback, and engaging in self-assessment tools can be beneficial.
Build Competencies
· Develop Core Skills: Focus on enhancing both hard and soft skills required for the leadership role you aspire to. This may include technical expertise, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and effective communication.
· Seek Learning Opportunities: Enrol in courses, attend workshops, and participate in webinars related to leadership. Reading books and listening to podcasts on leadership can also provide valuable insights.
Gain Experience
· Take on Stretch Assignments: Volunteer for projects or tasks that push you beyond your comfort zone. This helps you build new skills and demonstrate your readiness for more significant responsibilities.
· Seek Mentorship and Coaching: Find mentors or coaches who can provide guidance, share their experiences, and offer constructive feedback. Their insights can be invaluable in navigating the transition.
Build Relationships
· Expand Your Network: Build relationships with individuals across different levels and departments within and outside your organisation. Networking can open doors to new opportunities and provide support during your transition.
· Engage in Cross-Functional Teams: Participating in cross-functional teams can broaden your perspective, enhance your understanding of the organisation, and showcase your collaborative skills.
Manage the Emotional Journey
· Build Resilience: Develop resilience by maintaining a positive attitude, staying adaptable, and learning from setbacks. Resilience is crucial for handling the uncertainties and challenges of the transition period.
· Seek Support: Surround yourself with a support system of friends, family, and colleagues. Sharing your experiences and seeking advice can provide emotional relief and practical insights.
Remember:
Though fraught with uncertainty, the in-between stages of leadership are pivotal for personal and professional growth. By embracing this phase, actively seeking development opportunities, and demonstrating leadership qualities, you can prepare yourself to transition into your next role successfully.
Every great leader once stood where you are now. Use this time wisely to cultivate the skills, relationships, and mindset needed for your future leadership journey.
So why was I relieved? As I go on my MBA journey, I have noticed that I feel less confident because I have realised what I don’t know. Ahhh, that “sucky” place in the growth phase… consciously incompetent - when you know what you don’t know and wonder how much more you don’t know; it’s awkward, but one that I am happy to transition so that I can become even more valuable to my clients. I was relieved to know that it is normal and it means that I am growing.
Stay ignited and keep growing!
